Overview

Chromozoom is redefining personal health by combining DNA analysis, microbiome testing, and personalized supplementation into a single, accessible service. Their mission is to translate complex biological data into actionable lifestyle changes.

WDF serves as Chromozoom’s primary engineering partner, responsible for the entire digital ecosystem. This involves more than just building an app; we architected and operate the complete infrastructure that connects physical laboratory kits, a custom-built e-commerce platform, and a secure results dashboard. From the "MagicBox" data engine to the customer-facing mobile and web apps, WDF ensures that high-volume biological data is processed securely and presented simply.

The Business
Challenge

Building a direct-to-consumer genetics brand requires solving a contradiction: the platform needs the marketing agility of a retail e-shop while maintaining the rigorous security and stability of a medical data vault.

Chromozoom needed to sell diverse products—from DNA kits to recurring personalized vitamin subscriptions—and seamlessly link those purchases to complex scientific reports. The challenge was to create a "Unified Identity" where a user logs in once to buy a test, view their results, and order supplements, even though these actions require fundamentally different technical architectures. Furthermore, as the company expanded into microbiome testing and personalized supplements, the system needed to handle dynamic data structures without disrupting the user experience.

Our Role

WDF took full ownership of the technology stack, acting as the architect and operator of Chromozoom’s infrastructure. We designed a solution that separates concerns without fragmenting the user journey.

We built a custom e-commerce solution to handle the complexities of product bundles and CRM integration, while simultaneously developing a high-security application layer for processing genetic results. Our role extends to the core of the business logic: we are currently engineering "MagicBox 2.0," a next-generation engine designed to process bio-data faster and more securely, ensuring the platform is ready for mass-market scale.

The Delivery Journey

A strategic evolution from core genetics to a holistic bio-data ecosystem balanced rigorous security standards with the flexibility needed to launch complex, personalized products at scale.

Phase 1

The Foundation – Integrating Science and Commerce

The initial priority was to build a robust "Kit-First" architecture. We developed a seamless onboarding flow where physical DNA kits are paired with digital user accounts, acting as the key to unlock the platform. To solve the business challenge, we implemented a "Split-Backend, Unified-Identity" architecture:

  • The Shop: A fully custom e-commerce platform built on Django CMS, deeply integrated with the client’s CRM to handle logistics, orders, and subscriptions.
  • The App: A separate, secure Python/React environment dedicated to visualizing sensitive DNA and microbiome data.
  • The Bridge: Users perceive a single account. WDF built the synchronization layer that ensures when a user buys a kit in the shop, the app immediately knows to unlock the corresponding features.
Phase 2

Scaling together with a hybrid team

Raw data can be overwhelming. To drive retention, WDF expanded the platform from a static report viewer into an interactive lifestyle coach. We introduced gamification elements – Challenges, Lessons, and Tasks – that trigger based on a user's specific genetic predispositions. This required a flexible content management system capable of targeting specific "Phenotypes" (genetic traits), ensuring that every article and challenge is scientifically relevant to the individual user.

Phase 3

Transition to Esgian’s own engineering team

As Chromozoom introduced microbiome testing and DNA-based personalized supplements, the platform had to evolve from displaying data to acting on it. We upgraded the e-commerce logic to support "Personalized Products" – supplements that are formulated and sold based on the specific results stored in the user’s application profile. This required deep interoperability between the Django shop and the application backend, ensuring that the CRM receives the exact formula needed for each customer’s order.

Why It Matters

Chromozoom is now a mature, multi-product ecosystem running entirely on infrastructure architected by WDF.

  • Unified Experience: Customers move seamlessly between buying products and exploring their biology without ever feeling the transition between the e-commerce and application stacks.
  • Security & Scale: By isolating the e-commerce layer from the bio-data layer, we ensure that marketing teams can iterate on sales campaigns quickly (via Django CMS) without risking the stability or security of the core genetic database.
  • Future-Proofing: With the ongoing development of MagicBox 2.0, WDF is laying the groundwork for real-time data processing and new test types, ensuring Chromozoom stays ahead of the rapid innovations in the biohacking space.
